We Build Recruitment Partners with Mates in Mind to Tackle Mental Health in Construction
We’re thrilled to announce our official partnership between We Build Recruitment and Mates in Mind, a leading UK charity dedicated to improving mental health awareness and understanding in the workplace. This partnership marks an important step in our commitment to supporting the well-being of our workforce and the wider construction industry.
Why This Partnership Matters
Mental health challenges are especially prominent in the construction industry, and the statistics are alarming:
- A third of construction workers live with extreme levels of anxiety.
- 2 in 3 UK tradespeople have misused drugs or alcohol to cope with mental health struggles.
- 3 out of 5 employees experience mental health issues due to work-related stress.
- And most concerning of all, males in construction are almost 4 times more likely to take their own life compared to the national average.
These numbers highlight a critical issue that we can no longer afford to ignore. Mental health is just as important as physical safety on-site, yet it often goes unnoticed or unaddressed. That’s why this partnership with Mates in Mind is so vital. By working together, we aim to break the stigma surrounding mental health, encourage open conversations, and provide proactive support to those in need.
Who Are Mates in Mind?
Established seven years ago, Mates in Mind is a leading charity that empowers UK businesses to take actionable steps toward improving mental health awareness and support. They have already worked with over 750 businesses and directly reached almost 700,000 employees through their education and prevention programs.
Their approach is simple yet powerful: they focus on raising awareness, reducing stigma, and offering tools for both employers and employees to better understand and address mental health challenges. Importantly, they work to ensure that individuals know how, when, and where they can get support—before they reach a crisis point.
How Are We Getting Involved?
We’ll be launching a series of awareness campaigns and fundraising initiatives to help spread the message about mental health in construction. From social media campaigns to in-house fundraising activities, we’re eager to engage both our team and our community in this critical cause.
As part of our efforts, we’ll be sharing resources, stories, and real-life experiences, like Chris’s story, which you can watch here: Chris’s Story . This powerful video underscores why it’s so important to keep reaching out and supporting people in the workplace.
What’s Next?
We’re currently planning a range of activities to support Mates in Mind, including setting up a fundraising campaign to help provide mental health training and resources. Every contribution can make a real difference:
- £50 supports a text service for a day, potentially helping to save or change someone’s life.
- £1,000 enables mental health training for 100 workers.
- £2,500 sets 10 small organisations up with mental health support.
Our aim is to raise £1,000 per quater to help the charity continue their dedicated work in the industry.
We invite all of you to get involved. Whether through donations, raising awareness, or simply starting conversations with your colleagues and friends. Together, we can make a lasting impact on mental health in the construction industry.
