Mental Health in Construction – World Mental Health Day

Supporting Mental Health in Construction: World Mental Health Day 2024

Mental health in construction is a critical topic, in construction, it can often be overlooked. With long hours, high-pressure environments, and physically demanding work, the mental well-being of construction workers is as important as their physical safety. As we recognise World Mental Health Day 2024, it’s essential to talk about the mental health issues impacting this sector and the steps being taken to improve support for workers.

The Mental Health in Construction Challenge

In the construction industry, workers are more likely to face mental health challenges due to the nature of the job. A study from the Office for National Statistics (ONS) revealed that construction workers are at higher risk of mental health problems, with rates of depression, anxiety, and stress significantly higher than in other industries.

Factors such as job insecurity, physical strain, and isolation on-site contribute to the pressure. Unfortunately, many workers feel uncomfortable seeking help, resulting in untreated mental health issues that can lead to serious consequences, including substance abuse and, tragically, a higher risk of suicide.

Raising Awareness Through Mates in Mind

At We Build Recruitment, we believe that tackling mental health issues in the construction industry starts with breaking the stigma. That’s why we’ve partnered with Mates in Mind, a leading charity that focuses on raising awareness of mental health. Mates in Mind delivers education and training to employers and employees, empowering them to create safer and more supportive work environments.

Through resources like on-site counselling, mental health first aid training, and stress management workshops, Mates in Mind helps construction workers understand the importance of mental health and provides them with the tools to seek support when needed.

Our Commitment to Mental Health in Construction: Fundraising for Mates in Mind

Earlier this year, We Build Recruitment organised a successful 72-hole golf fundraiser in support of Mates in Mind. The event was a great opportunity to unite people and highlight the importance of looking after the mental health of those working in construction.

But our support for Mates in Mind goes beyond a one-day event. We are committed to fostering ongoing conversations about mental health in our industry. We want to ensure that our workers have the tools they need to maintain their wellbeing.

Looking Ahead: Continuing to Prioritise Mental Health in Construction

Further, the construction industry must continue to address mental health head-on. At We Build Recruitment, we’re proud to be part of this journey. Through our partnership with Mates in Mind, we aim to create a workplace where mental well-being is prioritised.

So, on this World Mental Health Day 2024, let’s remember that it’s okay to not to be okay. Seeking help is a sign of strength, not weakness. By talking openly about mental health, we can create a safer, more supportive environment for everyone in construction.
